A good predictor for long term overall effectiveness of alcohol recovery is what we as counsellors add to the client and their family (Laudet, Morgen & White, 2006). For Erica, a radically altered shift in addiction perspective, physical and emotional resilience, increased coping and effective communication skills, improved, connected relationships, new healthy rules and rituals, stable housing and employment, like-minded friends, community involvement, and life meaning and purpose (Laudet & White, 2008). The evidence base demonstrates that relapse prevention strategies are correlated with reduced substance abuse (Marlatt, Bowen, & Witkiewicz, 2009) and yet, as counsellors, it is natural to feel that we must create some big positive change.
